I would say Halloween is the start of Holiday benge eating that goes through New Year’s Eve where we all lack the Self-Control that is needed. It could be said of Thanksgiving, that it is the Mother of all holiday eating. Now today we are going to talk about Self-Control and how we all lack this in probably several areas of our lives. But first let’s look into the bible and what it has to say about the topic of Self-Control.
Self-control is the discipline given by the Holy Spirit that allows Christians to resist the power of the flesh
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.(Galatians 5:17 ESV)
When we lack self-control we are actually enemies of the Holy Spirit, enemies of God. This is serious and when we do not live a life that is consistent with the WORD OF GOD we become enemies of GOD. I am so convicted of this within my life and I continue to place all these different excuses before God hoping He will be happy despite my lack of self-control.
The problem with this is HE is not.
The Problem with this is I am only fooling myself.
We lack self-control because we are not willing to let go.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.(Matthew 23:25-28 ESV)
White-washed Tombs: We all can easily become this beautiful looking Christian on Sundays, or Comm Group or while serving in the community but inside we are full of death because of our lack of SELF-CONTROL.
I really want us today to find within ourselves the reason we are lacking, and then become adults about this and seek accountability in these areas so we can grow from here in the Spirit.
Let’s become an equipping church for each other and our needs. Let’s not hold things over each other’s heads and live in the past but let us strive to move past these things and live in the Hope of God.
Why? Because we serve:
A Creator and Sustainer and Provider and Hope-giver.
Self-Control is the act of putting on the new self, and releasing the old self.
We do not want to do this!
EX/ I would live to be in shape, but the reason I am not is because I lack the self-control to fight through the pain of the work-out.
I would like to eat healthy but I lack the self-control to stop my unhealthy eating habits.
Self-Control is the one thing that can stop the Holy Spirit’s ongoing work through our lives.
And as I’ve explained it is the one thing that keeps us not doing what we should in any area of our lives. Whether it be:
Spiritual – I lack the self-Control to pray and read my bible daily.
Physical – I lack the self-control to make decisions that are good for me.
Mental – I lack the self-control to sharpen myself so that I will grow in knowledge.
Emotional – I lack the self-Control to become strong yet tender in my emotions so the Holy Spirit can work within my life.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, (Titus 2:11-12 ESV)
TO RENOUNCE takes self-control.
To renounce certain things inside our lives will take a ton of Self-Control.
Let’s us all pray for Self-Control, let us bathe each other and this church in prayer so we may all have Self-Control.
Because when we have the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT WITHIN US other will come to know Christ and the Gospel will be propelled
My prayer throughout this series as been that the Holy Spirit would become real in our lives.
The question today is: Has He? Has He become real to you?
My prayer today is this: May the Holy Spirit guide us, may the Holy Spirit push us, and may we respond to Him and respond to others through Him.
